We have 2 different versions of the kits, in two different weights (DK and Fingering). All kits include 1 full size skein, 9 to 11 mini skeins (depending on the kit), hard copy of the pattern (with Ravelry download), and 4 stickers that correlate with the Morning Star story.

Elaine knit our sample in the OG Morning Star Kit in Fingering, she has some suggestions:

  • She had enough yarn left over to knit a 2nd from the same kit!
  • Knit with a US 4
  • Do a few rows of stockinette next to the ribbing
  • She used stitch marker for each repeat
  • You can add 3 pattern repeats to make it wider

OG Morning Star Kit : This kit is what was originally created for the Celestial Countdown. The main color for this kit is Horse Belly and it comes with 11 mini skeins

Candi's Choice : Greens and pinks, is there any other choice Candi would make?!? This version of the cowl was knit up in Fingering weight, and because she didn't want it quite so long she made it out of 9 skeins vs. 11. The main color of this kit is Napi.

DK Weight Version : Pintler DK is 75% Merino and 25% Nylon

Fingering Weight Version : Squish Fingering is 100% Merino

Here is our fingering sample, with all the extra yarn to make a SECOND one!

Please note:

  • MC can not be swapped out for other colors. Mini's will make at least 2 cowls.
  • Thank you to Robert Hall for the Blackfeet language and Jesslyn Starnes for the pattern layout and illustrations.

The Farmers Daughter Fibers is owned & operated by farm girl Candice. She embodies her heritage & home state of Montana into all aspects of her work. Candice hails from a rich foundation of ranchers, farmers, and women who were crafty & unpronounced in the tradition of knitting, crochet, quilting, sewing and cross-stitch. This 4th-generation artist continues to offer a product done in the traditional methods of hand-dying fibers. We can’t say enough about this yarn from her ranch in “the last best place.”

Candice started Sisters United in 2018, a program dedicated to healing Indigenous Women, Children, and Families.

Morning Star is a combo of an odd number of mini skeins and 1 full-size skein.  The story of Iipissoōwa”tsis and Morning Star is Candice's favorite Blackfeet creation stories. You can find a version of the story here.
