Sport weight, 368 yards, 100% cotton
This lovely cotton yarn is laboriously handspun on a drop spindle in Ethiopia by women working for a small cooperative comprised of single mothers. A single skein of yarn requires approximately 736 yards of handspun yarn.
The yarn is then imported into Rwanda where the ladies of Handspun Hope complete the process of dyeing it organically, using imported indigo extract, in the single-ply. Once the yarn is dry, the spinners then ply the yarn with spinning wheels into a two-ply yarn.
Due to the characteristics of this naturally hand-dyed yarn, actual color may vary between skeins. We recommend alternating skeins during knitting.
Hand wash and dry flat in the shade.
Handspun Hope is an initiative based on the belief that solutions to poverty should be entrepreneurial, innovative and holistic. Handspun Hope currently employs over 120 at-risk women in northern Rwanda. Many are living with HIV and are survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi, which occurred in 1994. The women create gorgeous organic yarn from our own flocks of Merino sheep and German Angora rabbits. In addition to the employment of these women and a total of 157 employees, we also run the Hope Artisan Collective, a curated collection of beautiful products from our favorite artisans and cooperatives. Handspun Hope and Hope Artisan Collective are both certified members of the Fair Trade Federation which means our practices have been rigorously vetted. Handspun Hope is proud to be the only creators of yarn certified by the Fair Trade Federation.
