When we saw this shawl, we knew we had to make kits! And now we have our custom combo in our Fuzzy Goat Kilim Shawl Kit!
Named for the expressive traditional flat woven kilims of Anatolia which often use colorful yarn remnants in playful combinations, Kilim Shawl combines two stitches in a textured wrap and a braided trim that is reminiscent of similar edgings on Anatolian saddle bags and socks. Long herringbone self-striping side panels are worked flat and edged with Latvian braid trim and a linen stitch band, then picked up and knit together while working the center panel. The entire rectangular shawl is then banded in the round, and trimmed working flat.
Designed by Catherine Salter Bayar, Kilim pattern download included.
The kit comes with three skeins of Uneek Fingering and one skein of Uneek Monokrom Fingering. 100% Superwash Merino, 435 yards, wide self-striping. There are many yarn combinations for this design that look wonderful. The dyer has sent us a combination approved by the designer which may vary slightly among specific color numbers. Our Traditional Kilim kits are in the colors in the photo on our chair, the last photo is a suggested way to wear the wrap and not representative of the colors.
Dimensions: 67” long by 14” wide. Linen stitch bands are 1.5, not including 3/8” braid trim.
Needles: US 10 for body, US 8 for braid trim (both 40"+)
Urth Yarns is a family-owned yarn company, whose yarns are dyed and prepared by skilled hands of women at their studios in Mersin and Istanbul. Aside from the velvety softness of the naturally dyed skeins, we love the whimsical variegated colorways. We also love that we are supporting the Earth as Urth Yarns plants a tree in Africa for every skein sold.
We would say that this skill level needed is intermediate. Here are the stitches that the pattern uses, it looks like a lot of fun! When looking at a pattern with someone in the shop, we always ask if the stitches in the pattern look familiar to ascertain if it is something they want to take on.
