FAQ

Fuzzy Goat FAQ

Answers to what people ask us most about yarn, our Curated Boxes, and visiting the shop in Thomasville, Georgia. Can't find what you need? Send us a message or call (229) 236-GOAT.

Curated Boxes & yarn subscriptions

What is a yarn subscription box and how does it work?

A yarn subscription box is a themed package of yarn and extras curated by your Fuzzy Goat team and sent to your door. Instead of picking each skein yourself, you get a set chosen to go together, always with a few tools or treats. Each one is released in limited runs. You can see the boxes open right now here.

What comes in a Fuzzy Goat Curated Box?

It depends on the box. A box is built around a theme and always pair a yarn with a pattern  with a few extras such as a pattern, a project bag, stitch markers, or other small goods. The exact contents are always a surprise, which is part of the fun!

Is a Curated Box a one-time purchase or a recurring subscription?

Our boxes are released seasonally as limited runs, so they come and go through the year. Each is a one-time purchase and not recurring subscriptions.

Do the boxes sell out, and how often do new ones come out?

Yes. We make boxes in small batches and they often sell out, which is why many show as sold out between releases. New boxes drop seasonally throughout the year. The best way to get first notice is to join the Goat Gang, our email list, which gets first access to new boxes.

Can I send a yarn box as a gift?

Yes. A Curated Box makes a ready-to-go gift for a knitter or crocheter because the yarn, pattern, and extras already work together. Enter the recipient's address at checkout. If you'd rather let them choose, we also sell gift cards.

Yarn & products

What yarn weight should a beginner start with?

Most new knitters and crocheters find worsted weight easiest to learn on. It's thick enough to see your stitches clearly and moves at a comfortable pace on US 7 to US 8 needles (4.5 to 5.0 mm). DK is the next step down if you want something a little finer. New to all of this? Start here and we'll point you to good first yarns.

What's the difference between fingering, sport, DK, worsted, and bulky yarn?

Those names describe how thick the yarn is, from thin to thick. Fingering is thin and used for socks, shawls, and lightweight garments. Sport and DK sit in the middle for tops and baby items. Worsted is a medium all-rounder good for sweaters, hats, and blankets. Bulky is thick and knits up fast for cozy hats, scarves, and quick gifts. We sort our yarn by weight so you can shop straight to the one your pattern calls for: fingering, sport, DK, worsted, and bulky.

What is the difference between superwash and non-superwash wool?

Superwash wool is treated so it can handle a gentle machine wash without felting, which makes it a practical pick for socks, baby items, and gifts. Non-superwash wool is left in its natural state. Its fibers grip each other, so stitches bloom and even out when blocked, which many makers prefer for colorwork and long-wearing sweaters. It does need hand washing and laying flat to dry. We keep a non-superwash collection if you're after the natural kind.

What is indie-dyed yarn?

Indie-dyed yarn is dyed in small batches by independent dyers rather than large factories. Because it's hand done, colors have more depth and small variations from skein to skein, and no two batches are ever quite alike. Stocking indie and ethically made yarn is the heart of what we carry. You can browse the full range in our yarn collection.

How much yarn do I need for a scarf, hat, or sweater?

It varies with size, yarn weight, and stitch pattern, so the most reliable number is the yardage printed on your pattern. As a rough guide, a worsted-weight scarf often runs about 350 to 800 yards, a hat about 150 to 250 yards, and an adult sweater anywhere from roughly 900 to 2,000 yards depending on size and length. When in doubt, buy an extra skein from the same dye lot. Bring your pattern into the shop or message us and we'll help you work it out.

How do I wash and care for hand-knit wool?

For most wool, hand wash in cool water with a little wool wash, press gently without wringing or rubbing, then roll in a towel to squeeze out water and lay flat to dry in its proper shape. Keep the water the same temperature through rinsing, since sudden changes and agitation are what make wool felt. Superwash yarns are more forgiving and can usually take a gentle machine cycle. Always follow the care notes on the yarn's ball band.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes. Fuzzy Goat gift cards work online and in the shop, and they're a safe bet when you're not sure which yarn or color someone wants.

Do you have kits for people who are new to knitting or crochet?

Yes. Our project kits bundle the yarn and pattern for one project together so you don't have to guess what to pair, and our crafty kits cover other makes. They're a good way to start without piecing supplies together yourself.

Classes & visiting the shop

Do you offer knitting and crochet classes for beginners?

Yes, we teach knitters and crocheters at every level, including people who have never picked up needles or a hook. Classes are small, with six students at most, and built around finishing a real project while you learn. Class timing changes through the year, so check the classes page for what's open now.

What skill level are your classes for?

Every class lists a level so you can find one that fits, named after goat breeds: Nubian is fun and easy with no experience needed; Angora is for once you've practiced your knits and purls or chains and are ready to read a pattern; Alpine is for confident beginners who've finished a few projects; Pygora adds skills like knitting in the round and shaping; and Cashmere covers advanced techniques. Pick the level you're comfortable with and you're set.

What is your class cancellation and refund policy?

If you need to cancel your class registration we are happy to offer a 50% shop credit refund for cancellations made at least one week in advance. Class fees are refundable when you cancel more than 72 hours before the class start time. Private lessons can be rescheduled at no extra charge with at least 24 hours' notice. Supplies are separate from class fees. Students receive a one-time 10% off discount card for after and up to two weeks following your class to be used in the shop (not applicable online). You will receive the discount card at your class. To cancel or reschedule, email the shop.
