My Knitting Machine Journey with the Halu Sweater, ep. 3

My Knitting Machine Journey with the Halu Sweater, ep. 3

How I (and you) are now ready for my next Machine-Knit Sweater

ep. 1 and 2 are here

My Fun-Won Tips for Your First LK150 Sweater Adventure

By the time I finished the front and back of my Halu sweater, I had become—if not an expert—definitely a wiser knitter than the one who eagerly cranked out that tiny first swatch.

Here’s what I learned, so you don’t have to learn them the hard way:

1. Swatch Bigger Than You Think

Make a real swatch. Big enough to measure several places.
And write down your machine settings for each one. No guessing.

2. Yarn Matters… More Than I Expected

The LK150 and I both learned we prefer yarn that’s
👉 four plies or fewer
👉 smooth, cooperative, not too grabby
It’s not that fluff is off-limits—just know you’re signing up for character-building moments.

3. Reset That Row Counter

Every. Time.
Symmetry depends on it.

4. Handknit the Underarm Area

A few rows by hand after splitting for sleeves makes the pickup onto the machine so much cleaner and more stable.

5. Lifeline = Sanity

Drop in a lifeline before switching to hand knitting or seaming.
You will feel clever. You will be clever.

6. Inspect Every Three Rows

Not five. Not ten.
Three.

7. Oversized Patterns Are Your Friend

Learning something new should feel playful, not punishing.
The Halu was wonderfully forgiving.

In the end, I have a sweater with flaws but one that I will love wearing! Learning the LK150 didn’t just get me closer to a sweater—it reminded me that it’s okay to be a beginner again, even in the craft we love most.

8. Get Ready to go again!

I have already started my Jessie Maed's Harvest Flower Sweater with an eye for knitting the stockinette on the LK150! I am using a round, bouncy DK, Sweet Georgia Yarns Merino DK and will put all of these rules above to use. I can't wait!

If you’ve been curious about dipping a toe (or sleeve!) into machine knitting, we have the LK150 here waiting to cheer you on:
